During a challenging chapter in her artistic journey, Faye Hedera embarked on the enchanting process of illustrating 'The Lovely Fruit Fairies.' Facing temporary mobility difficulties, Faye adapted her artistic practice. No longer able to create the large portraits that once filled her studio, she discovered a new way to paint: lying down and cradling lightweight canvases in her hands. In this intimate setting, her imagination blossomed, giving birth to the first image of what would become a beloved illustration in her book—a charming fairy perched on an orange tree branch, inspired by the lush beauty of her South Florida home.

The joy this whimsical creation sparked fueled Faye's inspiration for the next two years, as she lovingly expanded her collection of fairy paintings. Notably, her artwork embraced fairies with disabilities, both visible and invisible, adding a layer of depth and inclusivity to her vibrant world. When the time came to transform the series into a book, Faye collaborated with her then-twelve-year-old daughter, Zélie Minette, who lent her poetic talents to craft gentle verses for each fruit fairy. Together, they carefully crafted lyrical rhymes perfect for soothing bedtime readings, evoking cherished memories of childhood evenings spent listening to stories. As Faye began to heal and regained her ability to walk, she embraced a love for illustrating that continues to this day.

Published in 2024, 'The Lovely Fruit Fairies' has since taken Faye and Zélie on a heartwarming journey. They have shared their book with enthusiastic audiences at schools, libraries, and organizations, bringing an interactive "fairy experience" to hundreds of delighted children.
