During a challenging chapter in her artistic journey, Faye Hedera embarked on the enchanting process of illustrating 'The Lovely Fruit Fairies.' Facing temporary mobility difficulties, Faye adapted her artistic practice. No longer able to create the large portraits that once filled her studio, she discovered a new way to paint: lying down and cradling lightweight canvases in her hands. In this intimate setting, her imagination blossomed, giving birth to the first image of what would become a beloved illustration in her book—a charming fairy perched on an orange tree branch, inspired by the lush beauty of her South Florida home. This project included me creating 100 hand-painted portraits that were exhibited together at the Windgate Museum of Art at Hendrix College. Creating 100 Faces of Conway was my way of connecting with my new community here in Conway, Arkansas. Having moved to new cities many times, I'm all too familiar with the long gap between arriving and truly feeling at home. Originally, this project was a push to step outside my comfort zone and get to know Conway. But as it developed and I got to know my subjects, it transformed into a way to use my skills to bring joy to people in my community. READ MORE
